B VII

The Colts Bs opened their

account at Moulsford with a

cracking 4-0 win.

Doron Akinyanju

and

Louis Lord s

cored

superb goals, created from an excellent

flow of passes beginning with

Gus

Howland

in defence. Away to Cheam

was a trickier prospect. The boys put up a

good fight, particularly

Jackson Amies

in

midfield. Lord managed to strike from a

distance for our one goal of the match, but

their passing and finishing were superior.

MCS next, and early in the game the

boys had the measure of the opposition’s

defence and Lord scored a wonderful

opener. In the second half, he and Akinyanju

combined well to produce a goal each, as

the SF dominance continued.

Our next few fixtures proved a little

more taxing. Lambrook’s opening play

revealed their quality, and their clean

passing and better organisation slightly

flummoxed us. Despite their superiority,

Imran Tinubu

impressed with his ferocious

commitment in defence, and a late rally

saw

Nick Crawford

, in his pre goalkeeper

role, providing a classy goal with a clean

strike from some distance. However,

there was not enough time to redress the

balance and we went down 1-4. Crosfields

were also a little too strong, although we

competed well to score three goals – one

from Amies, using his pace and strength,

and another two from Lord – whilst

Tinubu repeated his Man-of-the-Match

performance.

After a further loss at Elstree it was

wonderful to see such a highly contested

match against Ludgrove. The teams, evenly

matched, delivered 100% commitment

throughout. By this stage of the season

the boys had started to find their feet and

the link up through the centre of the field,

from Howland in defence, via Amies, to

Finley Smith

to equalise was excellent.

The particular highlight of this game was

Crawford’s effort in goal which drew much

applause from Ludgrove’s Headmaster (and

referee). Another superb fixture was away

to Lockers Park. In the pouring rain, and

on a rather uneven pitch, the boys passed

nicely and defended well.

Oscar Gleason

made a really spirited display in defence.

Lord scored our only goal, from an acute

angle, and we left with a draw. It’s always

encouraging to finish with a win and our

final match against Cothill was a cracker.

Amies, Smith and Tinubu each chalked up a

goal as a superb team effort saw us finish

off the season in style.

The record for the season does

not look bad.To lose only three

of nine matches is a respectable

achievement but – my word! –

when we lost, we did it in style!

No offence to anybody – apart frommyself,

perhaps – but I suspect that, after only a handful

of practice sessions, I picked the wrong team to

play Moulsford. And then I compounded my

error by tinkering with the line-up, taking boys

on and off, changing their positions and so forth.

We scored first but lost 1-8.The journey home

was memorable. After heavy rain, the upper aisle

of the double-decker coach was ankle deep in

water, the heating was on full power and could

not be turned off, and the loo did not work. It

was not a great afternoon.

But then we got into our stride. I picked the

right team and stopped having a substitute.

We won the next four matches in some style,

beating decent footballing sides.The victories

over Lambrook and Crosfields were particularly

pleasing. We were only a minute or so from

beating Elstree too but an absurd muddle in the

box gave them an equaliser right at the end.A

draw may well have been a fair result.

Ludgrove had a couple of tremendous

players, and the rest were not bad either. They

thrashed us. Lockers Park were very reasonable,

too, but we played extremely poorly for some

reason and were well beaten again. Not one

chap hit his best form and this was our most

disappointing performance.The final match,

against Cothill, was a hard-fought encounter.

Having started strongly, we went down 0-1 to

a penalty. But we kept on playing gritty, skilful

football and won the match 3-2 in the end.

Rory McNair

thoroughly deserved his two goals

and a wonderful effort from

Harry Lowndes

Lumb

saw him strike and score from long range.

I relented and took a substitute along for this

one.

Louis Lord

, a clever player with good vision,

made quite an impact when he came on.

George Laing

kept goal bravely and our

back two, skipper

Sebastian Corso

and

Arthur

Virgin

, generally read the play shrewdly and

tackled tenaciously. In midfield,

Eddie Burnaby-

Atkins

,

Augustus Stanhope

and McNair were

determined and skilful and they loved to attack.

They could all score goals too. Our striker,

Lowndes Lumb, seemed to spend quite a lot

of time on the ground but he had considerable

ability on the ball and a good eye for goal. He

scored eight goals in total, as did Stanhope, with

McNair bagging six and Burnaby-Atkins two.

There were times when the teammight have

adopted a more positive and cheerful approach,

I felt, but lots of good football was played and

that mid-season run was quite excellent.
