1st XI

The 1st XI had a superb season,

finishing with a record of

played 10, won 7, drawn 1 and

lost 2 – a good reason for the

boys to feel justifiably proud.

As last year, the boys’ attitude

in training was first rate from

the outset, and especially

pleasing was that at no stage

did anyone take his place in

the side for granted.

Our first game of the season was played

in torrential rain over at Moulsford. The

weather made it extremely hard to play

any kind of passing football and so, in the

end, it came down to which team wanted

it more on the afternoon and we pinched

a winner right at the end. This victory

was the most crucial one in the season

as it gave the team a huge amount

of confidence and an understanding

that sometimes you can play below your

best but still pick up a win. Our next game

came quickly and in much better conditions

against Cheam.We started brightly and

played with a good tempo and we finished

up winning 2-0. Following two good wins we

were faced with a new fixture against local

club, Summertown Stars. Both teams were

evenly matched and a draw was a fair result.

Lambrook, as expected, produced a very

good side and, if I’m honest, the 1-2 loss in

the results table makes it look rather closer

than it actually was. This defeat wasn’t the

worst outcome as it meant that the boys

realised that they were going to have to

raise their game both in training and in

matches if we were going to compete with

top-level opposition.

The next two matches – Horris Hill

and Elstree – saw us pick up two further

victories in contrasting fashion. The latter

was not a great performance but again

showed the boys’ determination to pull a

result out of the bag when they weren’t

playing at their best. Following this we

played Ludgrove and, for the first time in

the season, the 1st XI produced an all-round

performance that saw us totally dominate

the game and earn a satisfying win. Just

before Long Leave we went over to Eton to

play their U14 D XI. In a very close game

Eton took the honours but, had our finishing

been better that afternoon, we could have
