3rd XI
The 3rd XI played good cricket
at times and the results perhaps
disguise the fact that it was an
enjoyable season.
We started with an overs match at Caldicott,
where our hosts scored an impressive 187-8,
despite good bowling from
Hector Brown
who took 4-21.We managed 88-6 in reply,
Hugo Halstead
scoring 36*.We followed this
with a good victory against Moulsford. In our
173-7 Halstead top scored again with 44,
Jack
Cross
made 41 and
George Lythgoe
27.The
opposition were dismissed for 82 (
Jack Miles
4-16).With two cancelled fixtures, the team
had to wait a month until their third outing
against Ludgrove. Only
Joseph Menell
, making
a rare appearance for the 3rds, bowled well
(4-28). Ludgrove declared on 105-3.We looked
as if we were going to lose easily until captain
Orlando Soundy
and number eleven
James
Allen
got together and batted out the last
thirteen overs to earn a draw.Who says timed
cricket is boring? The end of the Cothill match
was even more exciting. We set a large target
of 166 with Florian Hull scoring 50, Brown 40*
and Lythgoe 26*.Allen bowled well (4-37) but
the opposition reached 163-9 with one ball to
go.The ball was bowled by
Oliver Crawford
.
A catch was dropped in the outfield, a run out
was missed and two overthrows resulted in an
improbable tie.The Cothill players were thrilled,
we were disappointed, but it had been a good
game of cricket.
AndrewHeywood
took 3-12
against Caldicott in the return match which was
abandoned at tea because of rain. The match
against The Dragon started late, also due to rain,
and in twenty overs the opposition scored 87-7
with
Joss Barrie
taking 2-14. I will remember
his caught and bowled for a very long time.
Allen took 2-10 in this innings and showed
much more confidence as a spin bowler.
Halstead then proceeded to hit the ball hard,
scoring 40*, and we passed their score for the
loss of only three wickets.Against Cheam in the
last match of the season we batted first and the
opposition held some great catches. Our total
of 81-9 was never going to be enough, although
both of their openers failed to score. In fact
only four players out of twenty-two managed
to reach double figures. Cheam bettered our
score for the loss of only five wickets.
Sam
Barrington
was also a regular member of the
team who fielded well but always seemed to
hit the ball in the air and get out before getting
settled at the crease.
The 3rd XI was made up mainly of Removes
who will have gained from the experience. They
put in more practice than the 5thYears and
were much more competitive. It was a season
of mixed success, but plenty of good cricket was
played.
WB
4th XI
From the outset it was
obvious that we were going to
have a strong bowling attack
with nearly every boy capable
of taking wickets.
This made selection rather difficult and a
total of seventeen boys represented the team
during the season. We started the term with
William Llewellen Palmer
at the helm. He
captained with great skill and selflessness,
rarely bowling himself despite clear ability.
Francis Frankopan
took over for the last four
matches, demonstrating great passion and
improving tactical awareness.
It is always tough to take on the
powerhouse of Caldicott first (and last) in
the season. We started well with the ball and
Freddie Bulmer
impressed with 3 wickets.
Santiago Mazza
was also very effective
behind the timbers and helped to maintain
enthusiasm and energy. Sadly we lost as
a result of our rusty batting and excellent
bowling by Caldicott. Following a draw with
Elstree 3rd XI, we rushed through great wins
against Cothill, Ludgrove and Dragon.Against
Cothill
Luke Eadie
(4-11) rattled through
their top order ably supported by
James
Scott
(2-8) and Frankopan (2-14).
Arthur
Nicolle
(30*) and
Tommy Sainz deVicuña
(10) then guided us home safely.
Ludgrove proved rather more nerve-
racking because of our top order collapse
but some excellent batting from
Oliver
Crawford
(32) and
Andrew Heywood
(22*) helped us recover from 46-6 to 132-8.
We then skittled them out for 103 thanks
to wickets from
Charlie Bell
(3-11) and
Heywood (2-15).
Our batting came to the fore down the
road at the Dragon, where we posted a great
total.
Ernest Newland
(30) and
Patrick
Hannon
(25) started us off well before
Jago
Gourlay
set about the bowling and scored
54 off only 30 balls. Our bowlers, particularly
Bulmer and Nicolle, then finished them off
despite an excellent innings from one of their
boys.
We had great fun whilst playing some
good cricket despite the rather patchy
cricketing weather.
