Junior

Colts C, D

& E VIII

It was apparent from the offset

that this year-group showed

great strength in depth with

many boys of a similarly high

standard.

The boys worked hard in the early stages of

the term to develop a greater understanding

of the game, learn the new rules and

develop their existing skills. The season

began with a convincing win against Cheam.

Leading 40-0 at half-time, with hat-tricks

from

Austin Anite

and

Joel Balogun

, and

two tries from the captain,

Alverey Bowlby

,

the boys were then forbidden to score

unless they had successfully completed six

passes. This condition encouraged teamwork

and allowed

Zachary Sam-Alao

to score an

exciting last minute try. Everyone showed

great determination and the tackling was

particularly impressive.

The second match was against Lockers

Park A. Although the boys were a little

daunted at the prospect of playing a higher

team, they did not show this on the pitch

and put in some enormous tackles against

boys who were more experienced than

them. The final score, a 10-25 defeat, was

a creditable effort and fancy footwork saw

tries from

Tobi Amusan

and Balogun J. In

a nail-biting match against Moulsford –

always a strong opposition – we won 15-5,

and it was becoming clear that this team

were something special. At Lambrook

Tilewa

Balogun

ran rings around the opposition and

scored three tries from nowhere. Although

he had a tendency to run sideways, his sheer

pace was unstoppable!

Mark MacNaughton

scored his first try of the season after some

previous close calls. The team then went on

to win all their other matches convincingly

which bodes well for their future rugby

careers at Summer Fields.

The line-up changed constantly

throughout the season, giving many boys

the chance to play.

Masato Higuchi

suffered

from being off-games for a lengthy period

but when he was available he proved to be

a demon tackler and a strong runner with

the ball in hand. The Balogun cousins were

the top try-scorers, with Tilewa just ahead

of Joel. Special mention should be made of

Jago Barker

who, through sheer hard work

and determination, was the most improved

player of the season. The award for tackling

went to Bowlby who was the most reliable

man on the pitch – no-one could get past

him! He was an excellent captain who led

from the front.

By contrast, the JCD team, with only

three matches, had a more difficult time.

After a good contest with Lockers Park B, in

which we ran in four tries, both Moulsford

and Lambrook proved to be too strong

– and perhaps rather more experienced.

The boys showed admirable commitment

and defended heartily, led by

Henry

Roberts

, the captain, but the onslaught was

unrelenting. Nevertheless, they did well to

cross Lambrook’s line four times in reply to

their persistent pressure.

Otto Zimba Davis

finished as the team’s top try-scorer. There

were two matches scheduled for JCE but

sadly they were both cancelled because of

illness and injury.
