performance. Despite Newall’s 4-36, a poor

bowling and fielding display saw Ludgrove

post 215 – at least thirty more than they

should have done. The Summer Fields reply

never looked like it was going to reach the

target but, as wickets tumbled towards the

end of the innings, defeat looked a distinct

possibility in a game that should have

been quite winnable. Although relieved to

have drawn, the boys realised they had

been far below the level expected and they

put this right in the next game, at home

to Cothill. Clarke bowled well (3-20) and

Cothill posted an achievable 157. This was

duly overhauled, thanks to Barrett (52*),

assisted by Doughty and

Mark Spiridonov

,

despite an incredibly slow over rate from

Cothill: we received ten fewer overs than we

bowled. The return fixture against Caldicott

was much anticipated but unfortunately,

thanks to an incredible downpour at tea, the

match had to be abandoned. The weather

played a part in the next game against The

Dragon as rain during the morning meant

a delayed start and a reduced overs game.

Set an attainable target of 130, Summer

Fields got off to a slow start and were never

up with the run rate. A quick-fire 40 from

Doughty gave a glimmer of hope but the

team agonisingly fell nine runs short of

victory. Unfortunately the last game of the

season followed a similar pattern. On a pitch

where runs were difficult Cheam made 127

off their 30 overs, and we were optimistic

about chasing this down. However, again a

slow start left too much to be done late in

the innings and, despite another fifty from

Barrett, we were 21 runs short at close of

play, with five wickets still in hand. However

the season did end on a real high as we won

the Rokeby six-a-side tournament for the

second year in a row, once

again without losing

a game.

As ever I would like to thank JJP for his

tireless work in organising the fixtures and

for all the coaching that he does with the

boys, both on match days and in practices

during the week.
