U9 A, B,

C & D VII

The rugby season arrived in

November and both the boys and

staff immediately took to the

new laws of the game.

The removal of scrums, line-outs, rucks and

mauls have made the game at this level much

quicker and more enjoyable for beginners;

having the ball in their hands much can only

be good for the boys’ development. In their

tackling, the boys were as brave as any I have

seen in my five years coaching the U9s. Next

year they will need to work on moving the ball

wide quicker in order to attack where there is

more space.Apart from the Cothill fixture, all

match days saw every boy in the FirstYear (who

was on games) representing the school, so they

were all able to learn a little more about what

being a part of a team is all about.

The first game of the season for U9A was

an extremely exciting contest that saw Cheam

just edging it by one score. The following two

matches, versus Lambrook and Elstree, were

tough outings for the boys given that illness

and a bit of injury had struck the FirstYear

just before Long Leave. The next three fixtures

were all excellent matches and showed the

pleasing progress the boys had been making.

The Cothill match was arguably the game of the

season. Both sides gave absolutely everything,

and in the end we just did enough to win

25-20. Caldicott are well known for their rugby

ability and we produced another strong team

performance against them.To lose by just

one score was tough to take for the boys and

so they were fully focused on finishing their

season on a high by beating Ludgrove – which

they did 25-10.

Henry Snow

was the team’s

most threatening player with ball in hand

whilst

Leonardo Lord’s

tackling was hugely

impressive.

The U9Bs by contrast made a slow start to

the season, losing 5-60 (or one could call it

1-12!) to Cheam. They also found the going

hard against Lambrook and Elstree. After Long

Leave, they picked up their first win of the

season against a good Cothill side. In their next

match they were soundly beaten by Caldicott

– always strong at rugby – but to their credit

the boys turned it around against Ludgrove and

picked up a good win in their final game of the

season.Whilst the results for the C and D teams

were not what they were hoping for, they

certainly do not reflect the progress that these

boys made over the course of the season.

My thanks must go to SCR and Mr Fairhead

for all of their support in coaching the FirstYears

in games sessions and managing teams on

match days.Their enthusiasm certainly rubbed

off on the boys and they played a huge role in

the development of our young rugby players.
