1st XI
This was a successful season
with five wins from eight
completed matches, but it could
have been a perfect one as the
other three games (two losses
and a draw) could – and perhaps
should – have been won.
With many notable performances from
Remove boys in First Game, especially the
two in the 1st XI (
Henry Daly
scored lots of
runs and
Oliver Newall
finished as the top
wicket-taker), prospects look bright again for
next year. They will have some big shoes to
fill, though, not least those of the captain,
David Doughty
, who consistently set the
right tone,
Tom Capstick-Dale
, who built on
the promise shown last year,
Jack Barrett
,
who scored 256 runs, and
Edward Bingham
who always took any chance of a catch or
run out that came his way and saved the
team numerous runs – quite rightly winning
him the fielding trophy for a second year.
Playing at Caldicott is always a very
difficult challenge and even more so with
very little preparation at the very beginning
of the term. This was the test that faced the
1st XI and, with only four of last year’s team
returning, it was an inexperienced team
that set out with a mixture of excitement
and apprehension. It looked like losing the
toss was possibly the best thing that could
have happened as, having elected to bat,
Caldicott were bowled out for 71. However,
when we lost a wicket with the first ball of
our innings the realisation that this would
not be an easy run-chase immediately hit
home. So it proved, as the next two wickets
were lost with just five runs scored. At 55 for
8 the game looked to be going Caldicott’s
way but
Tom Howard
and
Willoughby
Clarke
steadied the ship and then saw the
team to victory in the final over, batting
with a confidence and maturity not shown
by the batsmen higher in the order.
The next game against Moulsford was an
absolute thriller as Summer Fields was set
197 to win. Barrett (77*) and Daly (85) went
about the chase with intelligence, increasing
their run rate gradually before really
accelerating in the last ten overs of the
game. Their partnership of 160 was fantastic
to watch and was a real highlight of the
season. It gave the whole team genuine
confidence that they could chase down any
score and win any game. Indeed Elstree were
quickly beaten by nine wickets having been
bowled out for 70, and this was followed
by an eight-wicket victory over The Dragon
in a rain-reduced Twenty20 at Stowe. Long
Leave came at just the wrong time for the
team and the Ludgrove game immediately
after the break saw arguably our worst
