The JCA rugby resultsmake it look

like the teamhad a very tough

term: five defeats in six games is

never going to look good.

There were, however, many positive aspects of

the season, played under the new eight-a-side

rules.

Chinweike Onwu’s

strong and speedy

running provided almost all the team’s points

(ten of the thirteen tries), while

DJ Banda

and

Vladimir Nevskyy

became powerful central

figures.

Harry Nell

and

Harry Nichol

were key

players, both able to see how the game should

be moving.

Henry Macdonald

was equally

reliable, providing a solid core for the team’s

new shape.

MubarakTinubu

forced his way

into the team as the best tackler in the year-

group (also capable of turning on the speed)

when

Somers Elworthy

dropped out through

injury, while

Alexander Loxton-Edwards

and

Kit Holland

were determined ball carriers. In all,

thirteen boys played for the team.

The side’s biggest failing was their reluctance

to stay in position, all too readily getting sucked

into the area of the breakdown, leaving large

expanses of exposed flank.Too often the ball-

carrier held onto the ball longer than helpful,

tying it up rather than pushing it into the big

wide open spaces ...“Push it wide, don’t get

stuck in the corridor of boredom and failure”

was heard from the touch line all season!

Early losses against Cheam, Moulsford and

Lambrook were not unexpected, but the biggest

disappointment was to surrender the advantage

against Elstree, allowing them back into the

game through some unfortunate missed tackles.

A closely fought game against Cothill provided

the sole victory, while the final encounter,

defeat by an unbeaten Ludgrove side, provided

an exciting second half, in which Onwu scored

four tries (more than the opposition had

conceded all season)! It was good to finish

on such a positive note, setting things up for

greater success next season, as Colts.

The JCB ‘Moleys’ had a

terrific season.

Apart from being beaten by Moulsford

and Lambrook who were much stronger

than us, we achieved two nail-biting draws

against Cheam and Ludgrove, to begin and

end the season, and beat Elstree and Cothill

convincingly.The boys improved dramatically

over the course of the term and worked hard

on their skills. With the new format of the

Under-10 game resulting in non-contested

scrums, a number of boys found themselves

in the pack at various stages, both in practice

games and in matches.

WilliamGiffard

had a splendid season, mainly playing as a

marauding forward; he was keen to be in

the thick of the action and showed much

courage on many occasions.

Dylan Guo

was a fearless rucker and tackler, always

prepared to lead sorties into the opposition

ranks – a great member of the team.

Ewan

Gleason

really grew in confidence as the

season progressed and increasingly got stuck

into the rucks and tackled tenaciously.

Milo

Millard

showed determination in his frequent

runs at the opposition and also tackled well;

he earned promotion to theA team for the

final match at Ludgrove.

Archie Dunipace

,

man of the match against Ludgrove, had

a splendid season and his reliable tackling

saved us on many occasions. His overall

effort was exemplary, maintaining the family

tradition.

MubarakTinubu

, new to the game

of rugby in November, steadily improved

and eventually earned his chance on JCAs,

thanks to his strong running and tackling. He

made remarkable progress in his first season.

Api Brown

was effective in attack, with his

scything runs through opposition ranks, and

he also defended tenaciously.Winger

Toby

Amusan

was our fastest runner and top

try-scorer (8), frequently getting round the

outside of the opposition.

Tate Cecil

also

contributed valuably with four tries. Finally,

what a shame it was that our captain

George

Marks

missed the final two games of the

season. He was the natural choice as skipper,

as he led by example with all his fine tackling

and handling of the ball. The team spirit overall

was terrific and much fun was had by all.
