4th XV

The 4th XV had more matches

in the calendar than any other

team and a cursory glance at

the fixture list clearly indicated

that they were in for a tough

campaign. Five of the first six

matches were away. Of the

nine, four were against 2nd XVs,

and one was against a 3rd XV.

The line-up of the team changed radically from

game to game – even fromminute to minute

sometimes! It was impossible to establish

any kind of continuity. There was little point

in working on specific moves in aTuesday

practice session because the team would

probably be completely different by 2.30

on theWednesday! But the boys did pretty

well – even when we lost. The match of the

season was against Moulsford, even though we

went down 17-22, the final score coming in

the dying seconds of injury time. Lambrook’s

3rd XV pipped us 10-12 and we performed

extremely respectably for most of the match

against Elstree’s 2nd XV.We had our noses

in front at 24-22 with less than ten minutes

to go, but lost 24-51! Not a great final ten

minutes, but that is what can happen when

you play a team that will, inevitably, contain

some decent, athletic players.

We played poorly at Shrewsbury House

and very poorly against Cheam’s 2nd team.

In the latter match our cause was not

helped by losing Kit Henderson to injury

midway through; we also had to adapt, at

very short notice, to playing thirteen-a-

side, with only six in the scrum: not what

was scheduled to happen and not what we

had trained for.We beat the Lockers Park

2nd XV convincingly away and won the

final sequence of three home matches in

fine style.

It is no crime to be ill – or to be promoted

to a higher team! - but I do admire the

chaps who turned up for every training

session and played in every match. And

they were

James Allen

and

Patrick

Hannon

! A big impact was made by

James

Scott

when he came in as scrum-half and

captain at half-term. In the Cothill match,

his early conversion from way out on the

left touchline was sensational!With an

extraordinary amount of absenteeism – for

all sorts of reasons – life on 2nd Game could

be highly frustrating, but I hope a certain

amount was learned about the sport.
