Hockey

The season started with high

hopes of success with many

5th Year boys returning for

their second year of hockey

and plenty of promising

Removes starting.

Unfortunately, illness and injury looked to have

thrown a spanner in the works for the first

engagement of the term, the Oxfordshire U13

Tournament.A number of boys who might have

been in the team were missing and those that

remained did very well to finish 6th out of 8.

We won the first game against Cokethorpe 2-1

but lost the next two group games against MCS

and Bloxham; New College School narrowly

defeated us in the 5th/6th play-off. The

attitude, determination and the skills displayed

by all the boys were very encouraging to see

and were a good sign of things to come.

Magdalen visited us on two occasions. In the

first encounter our 1stVII were just edged out

3-2, with goals from

Beau Swallow

and

Arthur

Nicolle

, while the 2ndVII lost 3-0.The next

match, against New College School, was not

until after Long Leave and the break seemed

to have a positive impact as both teams put in

better performances. Despite the good display,

the 1stVII were disappointed to only draw

3-3, with

Albert Sitwell

scoring two goals and

Swallow the other.The 2ndVII, 2-0

down at the interval, pressed hard

in their bid to score but conceded

two further breakaway goals.

Three days later was our

second fixture against MCS.

The 1stVII made a great start

with the captain,

Christian

Oberschneider

, scoring from

a wonderful reverse stick

shot.The team showed the

quality they were capable

of, scoring four further

goals – one from Swallow

and a hat-trick from

David

Doughty

– and, despite

conceding three

goals, the

victory

never

looked

in doubt.

The 2nd

VII, too, made a pleasing start

to their game and created a

number of chances. However,

they were guilty of giving the

ball away too easily and were

made to pay as MCS scored

two quick goals. Despite some

better hockey from the SF team

they could not get past the

MCS goalie and unfortunately

conceded again to change ends

3-0 down. Pleasingly our boys

took on board the advice given at half time

and they re-started in a determined fashion.

After some good build up play,

Christopher

Gujadhur

was able to nip in front of the goalie

get a goal back.As the team pushed forward

looking to get another goal they left themselves

exposed at the back and, despite

Mahir

Mujtaba’s

excellent performance in goal, MCS

added two late goals to seal their victory.

The teams then travelled toWinchester

House for a very busy afternoon of hockey

where the 1stVII played their 1st & 2ndVIIs

whilst our 2ndVII played their 3rd & 4thVIIs.

Although all four matches were lost, our boys

all acquitted themselves very well. Goalkeeper

Fred Prickett

,

Henry Minter

and

Hector

Brown

all had excellent games for the 1st

VII whilst

Taragh Melwani

played very well

as stand-in goalie for the 2ndVII in his first

match. In the final outing of the term, against

The Dragon, our 1stVII started brightly, as

they had so often done previously. Chances

were squandered, however, and our opponents

were more clinical, especially at short-corners.

Swallow scored a goal in each half and Prickett

again made some heroic saves. The final score-

line was not necessarily a fair reflection of the

greater part of the match. The same could also

be said for the 2ndVII’s game. Neither side

could score in the first half, despite plenty of

chances for both teams. In the second half the

visitors began to find the target and eventually

came out 3-0 victors.

So it was a disappointing season in terms

of results but not in terms of performance, for

there were significant improvements in skill

level shown by all the boys, which was very

pleasing. Those in the FifthYear can go to their

senior schools with real confidence in their

ability and will, no doubt, play a big part in the

success of their respective teams. The Removes

will move to the top year, of course, and should

look to make further advances and I know they

will. With hockey becoming more and more

popular the future is bright for this sport at

Summer Fields.
