Cross Country

In a departure from precedent, the cross-country season

commenced at the end of November with the annual league

cross-country races. This was the first time in recent years that

the event had been held in the Michaelmas term, and the change

provided keen runners the opportunity to show their ability and

gain race experience before the major events in the Lent Term.

The intermediate race (2nd & 3rdYears) was

a great contest to open the proceedings, with

only three seconds separating the top four

finishers. Congratulations to

ArthurVirgin

(first),

Augustus Stanhope

,

JacksonAmies

and

Chinweike Onwu

(second, third and fourth)

for their performances. Inspired by the effort

and application of boys in older years, the U9s

produced the best year-group race of the day.

Henry Snow

ran exceptionally well to claim

first position, ahead of

OscarWilbraham

(second) and

EddieAram

, with every other

place keenly contested. The senior race was led

from start to finish by

Jago Gourlay

, although

his every step was closely tracked by

Tommy

Sainz deVicuña

and

Patrick Murray

, who

engaged in an epic battle for position down

the home stretch, with the latter edging it by

just one second. With every finishing position

counting towards the league competition,

Moseley just beat Case to the overall title.

Pinewood’s 34th annual meeting was

the first external race of the year. Our first

runner home was Amies in 37th place. In the

seniors’ event Gourlay won the individual

bronze, with Murray,

Jack Miles

and

Edward

Bingham

finishing in 10th, 14th and 16th

places respectively, which ensured that

we also took team bronze. The Chandlings

cross-country races, covering three separate

year-groups, featured the debuts of thirteen

runners (including five 1stYears) from our group

of seventeen entrants.The U9s performed

very well, especially Snow (10th place) and

Wilbraham. Due to a mistake at the start line,

our 2ndYears had to run straight from their

warm-up to join the back of the field in an

effort to join the race after the start!

Harry

Nichol

finished an extremely creditable 37th

and all the boys responded to a tough situation

with great application. In the U11 finale,

Oscar Gleason

was our first runner home,

closely followed by

DoronAkinyanju

.The

Greyhound Run at the Oratory School saw the

boys compete well over a tough course.Amies

was our best 3rdYear, finishing 15th, whilst in

the senior race Sainz deVicuña finished in an

excellent 11th place with

Florian Hull

in 27th.

 The National Prep School Cross-Country

Championships occurred during short leave

and it was great that so many boys and their

families were prepared to sacrifice their holiday

time to take part. The weather in Malvern was

beautiful and the course stunningly difficult.

In the junior teamAmies (90th),Akinyanju

(204th), Gleason (207th) and Stanhope (249th)

gave excellent performances. In the senior race

Gourlay (62nd) was our first runner home,

followed by Bingham (81st),

Cosmo St. John

Cooper

(98th), Murray (126th) and

Callum

Lloyd

(188th).

Whilst the nationals marked the end of the

formal cross-country season, thirty 5thYears

joined a group of staff runners in participating

in the OxfordTown and Gown run for Muscular

Dystrophy UK on Sunday 15th May. In the

junior event a few of our teammembers were

able to compete for top positions as the race

neared its conclusion; in the 12-13 age category

Gourlay finished second and

Jack Barrett

,

Bingham and Murray finished fourth, sixth and

eighth respectively. All our runners finished well

up the 277-runner field.

Thank you to all the boys, parents, spectators

and runners for their hard work and support

throughout the cross-country season.Although

running is fun, it is also tough and requires great

discipline.A special thanks goes to all those

friends and family members who contributed to

our fundraising effort for the OxfordTown and

Gown run (over £1,100 was raised for Muscular

Dystrophy UK).We hope participation in the

race will become an annual event for Summer

Fields for boys, staff and also parents.
