Public Speaking
It is the astounding range of interests amongst the boys at
Summer Fields that strikes you most, as preparations for the
Lent Term’s Public Speaking Competition begin.
All boys prepare a five-minute talk on a
subject of their choice and present them
to their peers, in the class heats. The boys
learn to reduce their ideas into note form,
so as to avoid a mere reading of their work.
They think hard about organising their ideas
logically, often telling stories and finding
illustrations to enhance the information
they are communicating. Then they work
on vocal pace, volume and tone. In the
1st Year Final,
Archie Heseltine
spoke
enthusiastically and knowledgeably about
Horses and Polo, and
Isaac Aldred
described
the de Havilland Mosquito, its role in the
SecondWorldWar and its connections to
his own family history. The winner however
was
Jake Lee
, speaking eloquently on the
subject of Muhammad Ali.
The Junior Final gave us insight into
topics such as The Magic Circle, Robots
and the Doric Dialect. An exciting part of
EdwardWhitbread’s
talk on the subject
of Drones was a brief drone flight around
Macmillan. GIJP judged that the winners
were
Cenk Oguz
, speaking with brilliant
dynamism on the topic of Graffiti and
Archie Dunipace
, who spoke with equal
enthusiasm, on Rainforest Animals.
Mr Martin Piper from Ferndale School
adjudicated our Senior Final.
Iichiro
Koizumi
spoke extremely knowledgeably
about Romanticism in Music, as did
Taragh
Melwani
about ‘Kamikaze’. Jinsung Ha
discussed our reasons for playing computer
games and
Alexander Sweetnam
talked
about the Dyson brand. Communicating
their material with aptitude and flair, the
winners were
Hieronim Hodges
speaking
about the scientist Alexander Fleming,
and
Freddie Bulmer
speaking about the
Turkish archaeological site, Gobekli Tepe.

Poetry
Reading
The final week of the
Michaelmas Term saw both
the Senior and Junior Poetry
Reading Competitions.
Our judge for the former, Mr Christopher
Elliott, Head of English at Radley College,
commented on the ambitious nature of the
boys’ choices; indeed, the range was highly
entertaining! The Junior readers, judged by
MJF, were equally enjoyable and amusing.
Winners were Claude Barker, Rory Nell, Gus
Howland, Harry Nichol and Joint winners in
1st Year: Jago Edsberg and Leonardo Lord.
