other local schools.

For the first time ever, we had two

representatives in the opening event, the U14

75m hurdles heats, which saw both our athletes

make it to the finals, where Edu performed

superbly to gain a bronze medal, with Gourlay

coming an impressive fifth. The day was not

over for the latter, who still had the 800m to

run. In a very fast race, he was just off his PB,

which placed him a commendable 7th out

of the 20 competitors. Balogun had a tough

day: notwithstanding that fact that he was

competing against boys more than a year older

than him, he also had the potential prospect of

four sprints ahead of him. In the 100m he came

second in his heat, qualifying for the finals,

a performance he matched perfectly in the

200m. In the finals he came fifth in the 200m

and seventh in the 100m. Bingham, though

physically dwarfed by his competition, still

managed to come fourth in his U14 200m heat,

but sadly did not qualify for the finals. Newall

performed well, but significantly below his PB,

finishing 11th in the U13 Javelin competition.

Conclusion:

The end-of-term Prize Giving saw the delayed

LeagueAthletics Cup awarded to Case for a

fourth consecutive year.TheAthletics Standards

Cup (awarded to the League who gains most

Reds on the athletics standards sheets) was also

won by Case

Coaching athletics always remains a pleasure:

in contrast to some other sports, the boys do

not have daily practice time allotted as part of

the curriculum (although there are many who

would happily accept this, given the chance),

but commit the time that they can afford.

Their positive involvement is matched by the

enthusiasm of a small band of dedicated staff,

in particular EJO and CS. Significant input also

came from SRF, MLS, DRW and Miss Margin

who assisted me during games sessions and

PE lessons. I am also indebted to the logistical

support provided by SJS at athletics meetings,

without which we would struggle to compete.
