Track and Field

With eleven distinct disciplines at Prep School level, as well as the

technicalities of race starts, relays, understanding the different

approaches adopted in team and individual competitions, and so

on, athletics coaching requires a broad skill set in addition to a

focus on the technical minutiae.

Thus it was a pleasure it was to gain the

enthusiasm and experience of EJO for

the 2016 season. Sadly, weather played a

detrimental part in the preparation of the

boys for competition, and with minimal

practice the first meeting was upon us.

Caldicott Athletics Meeting

(Tuesday 3rd May)

For the first time this term, sunshine and dry

conditions welcomed an afternoon of athletics:

a key ingredient on grass, with six schools

(Summer Fields, Caldicott, Elstree, Horris Hill,

Papplewick &Winchester House) competing

in all five age groups for the chance to win

the Caldicott Shield. Overall, the 31-strong

squad competed admirably, amassing 27

individual medals (12 Gold) and three team

(relay) medals. In a close-fought battle with

Caldicott, the final results saw Summer Fields

come second, considerably ahead of the other

four schools. Following this first meeting,

Jago

Gourlay

was appointed Captain of Athletics.

Prep School Athletics Meeting: Stowe

School (Monday 23rd May)

Last year the Stowe meeting was in part

curtailed by extraordinarily heavy rain resulting

in short-term flooding of certain areas. This year

saw the cancellation of middle distance races as

a result of a nearby bee infestation. I am already

planning for famine and earthquakes next

year. Notwithstanding, it remains a pleasure

to compete at Stowe. Now in its seventh

year, the Stowe Meeting saw eight schools

(Beachborough, Cheam, Northcote Lodge,

Thorngrove, Broomwood, St John’s College,

Spratton Hall and Summer Fields) competing

in four age groups, with perfect conditions

allowing for excellent competition.

Our 20-strong squad returned from an

outstanding afternoon of athletics, amassing

20 individual medals (10 Gold) and a team

(relay) gold medal. Our U14 team performed

sensationally, with each competitor gaining a

medal; Gourlay competed in the hurdles as a

guest (his 800m race having been cancelled)

and came first, but as a guest racer he was

ineligible for a medal. All four age groups won

their respective group competition, resulting in

Summer Fields also winning, by a comfortable

margin, the overall competition. This is the first

year that we have achieved the clean sweep at

Stowe and we now have five large trophies to

be proud of!

Prep School Athletics Meeting: Radley

College (Thursday 9th June)

Always timetabled to coincide with the end of

Common Entrance, the Radley Meeting is our

longest-standing athletics fixture. However,

with CE dates changing and the number of

competitors increasing, it will be necessary

for some careful restructuring of the meeting.

Things have come a long way since the original

meeting in 1999 between Radley’s U15 and

our U14s! This year saw nine schools compete:

Abingdon, Caldicott, Cheam, Dragon, Elstree,

Horris Hill, Moulsford, Pilgrims and Summer

Fields.Throughout the competition, there was

a constant three-way tussle for first place,

between Caldicott, Dragon and Summer Fields.

By the end of the meeting, Caldicott just

secured victory, closely followed by Summer

Fields, with the Dragon third overall.
