The Wind in the Willows
Begun as a series of bedtime
stories and culminating in a
classic children’s novel, the
Wind in theWillows has been a
long-time favourite.
For the Michaelmas Term production,
the Summer Fields cast of mainly senior
boys breathed magical new life into the
whimsical nostalgia of Kenneth Grahame’s
riverside world in their production. The
actors recreated the friendships of Ratty,
Mole, Toad and Badger with great vivacity,
following their adventures on the open road,
in the wild wood and at Toad Hall.
A cleverly designed set and authentic
costumes added to the Edwardian charm, as
did the masterful audio visual effects, and
in particular the unforgettable depiction
on film of Toad’s truly disastrous driving!
Most memorable, however, were the
sensational performances of the cast: the
intimidating wild-wooders, the young carol
singers, the forces of law and order and
those kindly inhabitants of the Grahame’s
imagined countryside world who aided the
fugitive’s escape. The stars of the show were:
Jinsung Ha
, who made a suitably stern
and censorious Badger;
Ernest Newland
, a
gently impulsive mole;
Orlando Soundy
, the
pragmatic and kind-hearted Ratty; and
Jake
Simpson
, the truly wonderful bumptious,
weak-willed, but utterly charming, Mr Toad.
A triumph for GIJP and his cast.
