interesting variety of 20th century art and sculpture. We made a
series of detailed studies in our sketchbooks and then went on a
tour of the visiting exhibition that included paintings by Jan Van
Rieet, whose parents met in a concentration camp.
The highlight of the year was a week’s visit by Maeve Clancy as
artist-in-residence. A successful working artist based in Ireland, she
often uses cut paper in installations she has been commissioned
to produce. She helped the boys create a stunning paper cut
tower, using the architecture of Oxford as a starting point for their
own window designs. We were impressed by her enthusiasm and
professionalism and a number of boys have continued to develop
their skills in this fascinating medium.
For me, as a new member of staff, it has been an extraordinarily
busy and rewarding year. I hope that the Art department continues
to be a place of learning in the very best sense of the word and
that those who leave Summer Fields will take with them a lifelong
appreciation of the subject.
