Current pupil Theo Mellor enjoyed two unusual areas of success
outside school during the year. Despite being several years younger
than any of the other contestants, he competed in the finals of
the National Junior Magic Competition, held annually at the Magic
Circle. After a confident performance on stage, Theo came away with
the much coveted Originality Prize along with £100. Just when he
thought it couldn’t get any better, he was awarded second place
in the stage competition winning yet another trophy. We wish him
further triumphs as he makes his name in the Young Magicians
Club. Pursuing a separate interest, Theo was also selected to take
part in the new drone-based television programme, Airmageddon,
devised by the creators of Robot Wars for CBBC. He was particularly
impressive in flying his drone around an assault course.Well, it all
makes an interesting change from junior county rugby/cricket/
football/tennis!
Also on the national scene, Christian Oberschneider passed the
audition for the National Youth Boys’ Choir of Great Britain and
attended their Easter holiday course in Nottingham.
At the beginning of July, following his brief trip to the Thiepval
Memorial to represent the school at the National Commemoration
of the Somme, CS rushed back to welcome Alexander de Broë
Ferguson (OS) and members of his family, who were visiting
Summer Fields with a special gift for us. They had commissioned
a copy of the famous portrait of Field Marshal Earl Wavell (OS) by
Simon Elwes, which hangs at the BlackWatch Castle and Museum in
Perth. Alexander and his grandfather, Brigadier E.N. de Broë Ferguson,
a former chairman of the BlackWatch Association, presented this
picture and also donated a copy of the recent biography,Wavell –
Soldier and Statesman, by Victoria Schofield. We are very grateful to
them for their generosity and thoughtfulness.
September 2016 (late news): we welcomed two new teachers. Keith
Rutherford (Maths) taught at Cheam and then became Deputy Head
at Ashdown House, but more importantly … he came over from
Australia to spend his Gap Year at Summer Fields some twenty years
ago. He will have
noticed a number
of changes. Daniel
Parsons (English)
was Head of
English and Head
of Year 7 at RGS,
HighWycombe.
ClemmieWidgery
(CJW) returned from her maternity leave, and Deborah Ives (DCI),
who was covering her job, assumed a permanent teaching position
within the school. Harry Norris (OS), who has just left Stowe, has
signed on as a Gapper for the year.We congratulate Mrs Sam
Robinson on her appointment as Head of Instrumental Music,
replacing MRJJ, who has moved to a part-time role in order to give
time to his music composing.
