The Action Adventure programme at Summer Fields was launched in 2005. The programme was designed specifically to stimulate and enrich the academic and creative desires of children through outdoor adventure. Action Adventure was so successful that the Adventure Quest programme was developed to include younger age groups.
Adventure Quest was designed by Summer Fields’ staff member, Richard Bradwell, in consultation with an adventure specialist company. It provides an engaging programme of adventure activities specifically tailored to suit boys at Summer Fields. It is sequential in nature, each new challenge building on the skills acquired in previous adventures. All the usual activities are offered: rock climbing, caving, kayaking, camping, raft-building, navigation and survival skills. However, within this framework we hope to offer boys the opportunity to broaden their horizons by introducing various sports and hobbies, as well as activities involving citizenship, team work and leadership skills. Adventure Quest activities are designed and structured to complement each other, to build trust, co-operation and initiative - an indisputable investment in children and their development through their understanding of the environment and each other. All are spiced-up with that essential ingredient: FUN!
Boys will commit to the programme for a minimum period of a term, so that they gain sufficient experience and skill to qualify for a certificate in one of the three levels: Bronze, Silver or Gold.
There are at least two Sundays a term set aside for Adventure Quest days, either at Summer Fields or at an alternative venue. The boys also have opportunities to work on their chosen projects during free time and half holidays.
Broadly speaking, the core aims and benefits for the boys are:
• To extend the boarding school experience
• To broaden social development and understanding
• To develop awareness of environmental issues
• To provide specific educational opportunities
