The Library
The Library provides a comfortable environment for the enjoyment of reading and knowledge transfer. It exists to promote a love of books and reading, to develop skills of information retrieval and to support the curriculum. It is a well-equipped learning resources centre, as well as a homely space in which boys can enjoy a quiet read. It is open at all times, books being borrowed using a biometrically accessed computerised library-management system.
The Library is well-stocked with roughly 6,000 books of both fiction and non-fiction. Boys are encouraged to read a wide range of authors, traditional and contemporary. Other resources include audiotapes, internet access, magazines and chess sets.
The School computer network extends into both the Library and the adjoining study room, which houses four computers in conjunction with a 42” plasma screen providing large screen viewing of BBC News 24, educational channels, interactive websites and library information. Pupils and staff can access the Library catalogue remotely via the School network.
First Years (Year 4) are trained to use the Library and to develop the skills needed for research in special resources lessons. They learn about the Dewey Decimal classification system and how to navigate the resources available via the computerised catalogue search programme.
The boys also have the opportunity to volunteer as ‘Library Assistants’ and help out every day after lunch.
The Library is also home to old and treasured volumes dating back to the Foundation of the School.
