The Learning Support Department

Summer Fields has great concern for pupils with learning difficulties and the school is determined that these pupils should have full access to the curriculum. Early identification of any problem such as dyslexia or dyspraxia is important and through specialised teaching we aim to help a boy achieve his academic potential.

If a boy is identified with a learning difficulty an individual learning programme is set up for him for which there is an extra charge. The majority of lessons are 30 minutes in length and may focus on any of the following areas; literacy, maths, study skills, organisation, handwriting, occupational therapy or speech and language therapy. The department is well resourced with multi-sensory equipment, specialist computer programmes and assessment materials.

There are six part-time learning support teachers who are all fully trained in the area of special needs as well as a visiting occupational therapist and a speech and language therapist. Close links are also maintained with other professionals such as educational psychologists.

The department is situated in the centre of the school which means the members of the learning support staff are able to liaise closely with the rest of the staff about pupils. Contact with parents is maintained at Parents’ Receptions, by email and by telephone; reports are written every term.

The members of the Learning Support Department help and encourage the boys in any way they can. They aim to help a pupil become a confident member of the school community by working in partnership with him, his parents and teachers.
