OSS Charity Ride for the Ear Foundation
07/07/2010
Four Old Summerfieldians, Frederic Bolton (OS 1999-2004), Thomas Bolton (OS 2001-2006), Adam Bolton (OS 2001-2006) and Cosmo Studholme (OS 2001-2006), will be cycling 874 miles from Lands End to John O’Groats this summer to raise money for the Ear Foundation. Frederic and Adam will bicycle together for the entire journey at a quick pace and Thomas and Cosmo will cycle together, Thomas on a conventional bike and Cosmo on a unicycle!
Frederic Bolton was deafened by meningitis at the age of 20 months, and two years later, he had a cochlear implant which has enabled him to go to mainstream school with no extra support and to lead a relatively normal life (apart from the odd panic when all his batteries failed during his travels in India last year!). Now the Boltons would like to show their gratitude for the immense support that the Ear Foundation provided for their family both before and after Frederic’s implant.
Frederic and Adam Bolton are aiming to cycle 150 miles a day and donations can be made via this Just Giving link: www.justgiving.com/Adam-Bolton.
Donations toward Thomas Bolton and Cosmo Studholme’s unicycle ride can be made at www.justgiving.com/madunicycleride.
The Ear Foundation is a UK based cochlear implants support charity, providing activities and support to families, carers and volunteers with deaf children.
The Emerald Hill School for the Deaf
Frederic and Adam are also trying to raise funds for the Emerald Hill School for the Deaf in Harare, Zimbabwe. Emerald Hill is the only secondary school for the deaf in the whole of Zimbabwe and has 200 deaf pupils ranging in age from 3-20.
Frederic visited the school earlier this year when travelling with school friend, James Fleming, whose aunt, Anna Fleming, works at Emerald Hill and will be handling the fundraising initiative in Zimbabwe. If you wish to support this cause, please email the Boltons for more information about how to make a donation.

Art Exhibition 2010 Review
Ludvig Ljungström Vth Form
This year has been a very active year in terms of art. We have had several artists visit including a return of Edwina Bridgeman and two visits from Sarah Jones. Also from these visits we have done lots of other work that has been inspired by these visits. The 5th Year have had a batik project inspired by Sarah Jones and the spirit pole project that stands outside the corridor between Bolton and the main school area.

The highlights of the exhibition are the film which is show on a continual loop and the larger batik that was made only a week ago to be put at the back of chapel as a piece of art as remembrance of those Old Summerfieldians and teachers who have lost their lives in conflict in the two Great Wars.
This year has gone in a blur and it is good to have something apart from work to mark how the year has gone by. This year has been an enormous creative success based on the interpretation of everything around us; this is the first time that it has been done in this way with such quality. And as far as I can see the art is going to get better. This has been a great year of art at SummerFields, but it is only the first of many.
2010 Choir Tour to Germany
03/06/2010
From 27th – 31st May, a large party of choristers, staff and parents journeyed to Cologne for the 2010 Summer Fields Choir Tour. Previous trips and venues, together with a growing reputation, helped the Choir to gain entrées to four stunning buildings: two large Romanesque churches in Cologne, Bonn Munster and Altenberg Abbey, which houses one of the largest (and loudest!) organs in the world. The Choir sang at four masses with music ranging from Byrd to Duruflé via Wesley, Bruckner and Fauré, and highlights certainly included Toby Steel’s singing in Mendelssohn’s Hear my Prayer in the concert at St Andreas.
Once again, history and culture played a large part in the Tour which was tremendously masterminded by TMLE. Highlights of the weekend included a visit to Burg Kreuzberg where the Choir sang in the chapel and were hosted for lunch by Baron Albrecht von Boeselager. They also visited several WWII cemeteries where Mr Sparrow guided the group to Old Summerfieldian graves where the Choir held a very moving act of Remembrance.
As ever, the singing was remarkable, a truth which was reflected in a lovely email from one of the Cantors for whom the Choir performed:
“Just to say that we were very delighted to have you and that your singing was brilliant. People in the audience loved it very much and it was a very nice snapshot of the great British choral tradition.”
What more needs to be said...

On Thursday 6th May 2010, the Mynors Class visited the Oxford University Museum of Natural History to view the "Young Art Oxford" Exhibition in aid of Cancer Research UK.
"Young Art Oxford" is a special art exhibition created by around 1000 pupils from 24 schools across the county of Oxfordshire. The artwork of 6 Summer Fields pupils was chosen to be exhibited. In total, 322 artworks by children aged between 4 and 14 were selected for the exhibition.
The vibrant paintings, drawings, postcards and prints were based on the theme "I Remember", and those displayed at the museum were chosen by illustrator and author Korky Paul, teacher and author Sarah Simblett and pottery designer Emma Bridgewater.
All artwork was available to buy, with the proceeds going towards research into the genetic causes of cancer in children. Organiser, Belinda Hanson, said that it is "a clever concept of raising money and encouraging children to do more art. The idea is that it's children helping children."

Classical Brit Awards 2010
19/04/2010
Summer Fields would like to congratulate Stile Antico, an early music vocal ensemble, for their 2010 Classical Brit Awards nomination for the “Best Young British Performer or Group” category. Emma Ashby, a singing and piano teacher at Summer Fields, is one of the ensemble’s alto singers, and Peter Asprey (OS) is a former member of the group.
The New York Times has described the group as “an ensemble of breathtaking freshness, vitality and balance.” The ensemble work without a conductor, rehearsing and performing as chamber musicians with each member contributing artistically to the musical result. Their repertoire ranges from the composers of the English Tudor period to the Flemish and Spanish works and the music of the early Baroque years.

Summer Fields staff member, Ian Barrett, ran the 2010 London Marathon on Sunday 25 April to raise money for the Children’s Society. Mr Barrett has surpassed his £1,800 target in donations and pledges, and he wishes to thank all of the families who have supported him so far. This was his 13th marathon which he completed in 3 hours 44 minutes.
The Children’s Society is a leading national charity whose work is driven by the belief that every child deserves a good childhood. Through their network of projects, The Children’s Society’s helps over 50,000 disadvantaged children and their families each year. This charity provides vital help and understanding for those forgotten children who face the greatest danger, discrimination or disadvantage in their daily lives.
If you would like more information about how to support the Children’s Society, please click here to email Ian, or download a sponsorship form and post it with your donation to Ian Barrett Esq, Summer Fields School, Mayfield Road, Oxford OX2 7EN.
