William's experience

This article was written by William and appeared in the May edition of the Geneva English School Magazine.  William, whose father Justin is an Old Summerfieldian, will be joining Summer Fields in September 2010, as a First Year.

I flew to England with my Dad.  When we got to the school I played table football with some other boys, I made a friend called Bill.  I was excited and nervous.  We were called by three teachers and one of them, Mrs Cheater, took me to a classroom.  I had my Man Utd pencil case with me.  She gave us our papers and the first test was ‘Find The Right Word’.  There were 87 questions in total but she said we didn’t have to finish all of them.  I did 69.  Then we did Maths, it was 30 minutes long.  I found some questions hard.  I found the carrying questions hardest because I hadn’t done that method before.  I did all the questions.

Then we did sport.  We played ‘Duck, Duck, Goose’, then we did an obstacle course.  I was last to go for my team, and an athletic adult was helping the team on my left and I beat him by a fraction of a second.

Then we wrote a story.  Mrs Cheater gave us a title and I wrote about twin pandas who heard the emergency siren ring in China so they went to rescue two people who were drowning.  A boy sitting near me from South Korea couldn’t think of a story to write and he was upset.  Mrs Cheater was kind to him and gave him some questions about his life in Korea instead.  Next we had a spelling test with 30 words.  It was easy.  Then we had to do non-verbal reasoning.  It was not too bad.

At the end we got a key ring with a Summer Fields miniature rugby ball on it, and some older boys took me for a tour of the school.  It was a fun day.  They told me I would get my result within 14 days.

I checked the letter box everyday, but my Dad heard by email a few days later.  When he rung to tell me that I had won the academic scholarship Mum cried because she wanted me to stay at home, but I felt excited and proud of myself.  I am very excited about starting in September but I will miss my friend Arthur.
