Posted 30/11/2009

Nicholas Aldridge, Summer Fields' Archivist, gave a presentation in Chapel earlier this term about the Stained Glass Windows of Summer Fields Chapel.

The story about the Chapel and it's windows was very informative for the boys.

The illustrated booklet - The Stained Glass Windows of Summer Fields Chapel, written by Nicholas Aldridge, is available to purchase for £3 per copy, or £5 for two copies.

Junior Colts Cs, Ds and Es

Posted 12/11/2009

The Junior Colts Cs and Ds and Es have had a wonderful football season; indeed the best season ever! The final results read as follows: Played 23, Won 19, Drawn 2, Lost 2.

The two photos here were taken following two good wins of 6-1 and 6-0 against Magdalen College School on Wednesday 11th November.

The coaches have been thrilled with the boys’ fine play and progress throughout the season and would like to thank all the parents for their support - especially Tim Willes, for his witty “John Motson-esque” reports and Segar Reddy and Jenny Hu for their photos.

Football Coaching Session with Malcolm Crosby

Posted 09/11/2009

On Friday 6th November, the 1st and 2nd XI were treated to a coaching session led by the current assistant manager of Northampton Town, Malcolm Crosby. He took the boys through a set of warm-up and ball skill drills before working with the 1st XI on their defensive organisation. Mr Crosby, who previously led Sunderland to the F.A. Cup Final in 1992, was very impressed with the boys’ attitude and skill level in quite difficult weather conditions.

Summerfieldians Win Mathematics Competition

Posted 05/11/2009

We are delighted to report that Summer Fields’ team of Third Years won the Oxfordshire Schools Mathematics Competition at St Edward’s on Wednesday 4th November. Crispin Straker and Ayosile Ogundeyin came 1st, while Ralph Carro and Tommy Coleridge secured a very respectable 12th position out of 66 teams from 32 different schools. Our first prize winners were each awarded a calculator, and all of the boys won a geometry set for their outstanding performances.

Summer Fields’ Head of Maths, Christopher Walker, said “I’m absolutely thrilled, as we have never won this competition before and the academic standard was extremely high.  I especially like the format as it focuses on the boys doing the mathematics quickly, accurately and under-pressure.” Well done boys!

More details regarding the format of the competition can be found at www.dcbeagle.com/mathsch.htm .

Harvest Festival

Posted 13/10/09

The annual harvest celebrations at Summer Fields were as successful as ever with the usual combination of two services and the ever-popular sale of produce provided by parents.  In addition to some superb readings and a Mynors’ presentation in the Junior Harvest Service, the Junior Choir gave its first performance of the year with a rousing rendition of “Praise and thanksgiving.”  The Chaplain preached at both the harvest services and drew attention to the need for water in Africa.  The Senior Service included the Red Choir and the first outing for the Blue Choir who sang John Rutter’s ‘Look at the world’ – a most moving and impressive highlight of the service.  The Monday morning sale was as well attended as ever and the proceeds from this and the Chapel service collections meant that a quite amazing sum in excess of £1500 was raised for Water Aid.

Batik Workshop

Summer Fields welcomed artist Sarah Jones on Thursday 8 October to run a batik workshop with the boys. Ms Jones specialises in workshops in schools, with pupils creating large batik pieces with vibrant colours and bold images inspired by nature. The boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves and created the exciting batik shown above.

Cricketing Adventures

Five lucky Summerfieldians enjoyed a coaching session with Mark Ramprakash at the Oval on 12 August. The session was kindly donated by two Summer Fields parents after winning it at a charity event.

An even luckier Summerfieldian was mascot for the England one-day side in their second match of the series at Lords on 6 September. He was present at the coin toss with the England Captain, Andrew Strauss, and fortunate enough to meet the players after the match.

Third Year Trip to the Pitt Rivers

Posted 29/09/2009

On Monday 28 October, the Art Department took the Third Year on a joint trip to the Pitt Rivers Museum and to Oxford University's Museum of Natural History. Pitt Rivers' staff provided an exciting, colour filled workshop on the theme of masks.

Boys explored the museum's collection of masks using small torches to illuminate the artefacts found inside display cases. The workshop concluded with a creative session where teams of boys were able to construct a simple card mask based on ideas they had collected earlier. Each team thought of two adjectives to describe the mood of the mask they had created.

Mr Randolph led a Science workshop in the Natural History Museum which involved a trail he had devised for the boys to complete. Do have a look at the Science Department's Blog which is updated regularly.

Mystery Book Competition

Posted 24/09/2009

For the second year running, Summer Fields held the Mystery Book Competition to celebrate the Book Trust’s Children’s Book Week.

Summer Fields’ Director of Music, Mr Price, divulged the title of his favourite book to Ms Dardenne, Summer Fields' Librarian. Ms Dardenne displayed one clue outside the library each day from 5th-11th October and the boys had to guess the title of Mr Price’s favourite book. Parents were able to participate by following the clues posted on the website every day.

Clues

First Clue: 'My favourite book is actually six books published in three volumes.'

Second Clue: 'There is a definite Oxford connection with the author - he taught at the University and is buried just up the road.'

Third Clue: 'The book is a sequel to a story about a journey subtitled "There and Back Again".'

Fourth Clue: 'The heroes are very small people sometimes known as Halflings.'

Fifth Clue: 'The book invovles kings, wizards, walking trees, dwarves, elves and a ring.'

Marston Cup Golf Tournament

Posted 21/09/2009

On the first Sunday of term, it was great to see so many boys enjoying the golf course (which was in excellent condition), playing in the Marston Cup. Oliver Smith won with a score of 32 shots. Frank Faber and Tom Skinner were runners up with 33 shots, with Henry Davies in 4th place with 35 shots.

42 boys played and much fun was had by all, as can be seen in this photo (kindly taken by Lord Gilford). The boys are looking forward to the Parents and Sons Golf on Sunday 11th October and the match vs Ludgrove and Cothill to be held at Ludgrove on Sunday 18th October.
