G.B.: Master, Monster or Myth? is the story of Geoffrey Bolton, an inspiring schoolmaster but a figure of terror to some. Very few Summerfieldians between 1919 and 1960 escaped his influence. He had many favourites, and also bêtes noirs whom he treated less fairly. He looked like a skeleton, and his outbursts of fury were possibly due to his experiences in the Fist World War.

G.B. adored cricket, especially of his county, Sussex, and of his university, Oxford (he wrote its official history). He knew Homer by heart and loved the works of P.G. Wodehouse and the Savoy Operas. He hated sloppy English, onions, cats and Lloyd George. Some of the G.B. mythology borders on the unbelievable, and in this light biography Nicholas Aldridge, himself a pupil of G.B.’s, tries to sort out the fiction.

“The whole story amount to a very complete portrait of Bolton himself, prep school life generally and Summer Fields in particular... impeccably edited and written.”
- Christopher Martin-Jenkins
